A journey through the geological history of our land,
and a balance preserved for millions of years.
The mouth of the Sinni, where the Apennines meet the Ionian Sea. The river that gave this land its name.

Bosco Pantano di Policoro, a WWF oasis of oaks, ash trees and wetlands. The last Mediterranean lowland forest in southern Italy. On the full day, a walk of about 2 hours inside the forest.

The temples of Dionysus and Demeter and the remains of Siris and Herakleia, around the National Archaeological Museum of the Siritide.

A Romanesque sanctuary alone on a ridge, between the two rivers, with medieval frescoes inside. Golden light at the end of the day.

The Calanchi: clay carved by rain into ridges and valleys. An almost unreal silence at sunset, where the full day ends with a meditation.

Twenty minutes from Policoro, in Metaponto, fifteen Doric columns of the Temple of Hera still stand in the fields, as they have since the 6th century BC. A short detour into Magna Graecia, if the day allows it.
For millennia the Sinni river has been the lifeblood of the fertile Metapontino plain. The waters and minerals of the Lucanian Apennines feed the Bosco Pantano, the last lowland forest of the Mediterranean in southern Italy.
From here our journey begins, through history, culture and geology. By the end of the day you'll look at mountains, green and rivers with new eyes.
In the clay of the Calanchi you still find fossil shells: millions of years ago, all of this was sea.
